Christmastime Staples: Chex Mix

This one seems so obvious, but apparently there is need out there for a good Chex Mix recipe. It seems that all of the Chex cereal boxes now provide recipes for their "Chex mix" that talk about microwaving ingredients!?! Microwaving? No sir. We bake our Chex mix. Bake and stir, bake and stir. And we use real butter. Margarine is for the weak.

Homemade Chex Mix

WHAT YOU NEED:

2 sticks of real butter
6 tablespoons of Worcestershire Sauce (the new French's is great)
5 teaspoons of Lawry's Seasoned Salt
2 1/2 teaspoons of garlic powder
1 teaspoon of Obie Cue's Garlic Pepper
6 cups of Corn Chex
6 cups of Rice Chex
6 cups of Wheat Chex
3 cups of Honey Nut Cheerios
4 cups of Pretzel Sticks
4 cups of Pecans

WHAT YOU DO:

1. Pre-heat your oven to 250°F.

2. Cut the butter into small chunks and place it in a large roasting pan. Melt the butter in the oven.

3. Stir in the Worcestershire and spices, then gradually stir in the remaining ingredients until they are all evenly coated.

4. Bake the mix for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes to re-coat the cereals.

5. Allow the mix to cool, then store it in an airtight container for at least four hours (something great goes on with the flavor inside the airtight container).

Notes:

I am anti-bagel chip. You may be pro-bagel chip, and that's okay. I have heard about people wanting to add things like goldfish, cheese nips, wasabi peas, M&Ms...it's your world. You can switch out the pretzels and/or the pecans for other nuts and various goodies - just keep the total cup amounts the same to keep the ratios good on the butter and spices.

My grandmother has made this the old fashion way every year for Xmas as far back as I can recall. Just yesterday I heard somebody that I know to be a great cook say they use Head Country Marinade instead of Worcestershire to make their Chex mix. I'm going to have to give that a go!

This is a GREAT recipe. And one of my favorite holiday snacks. I'll be sending this link to my mom for this year's batch.

Yum. I think for my chex mix, I will use mixed nuts, and regular cheerios. I love real chex mix.

I am looking for a Honey Nut Cherrios and Goldfish cracker mix. Last year I made a mix that had these ingredients in it with coating having some sort of a sweet coat---I believe honey was in it. Can anyone help me with this?

I prefer Stephanie’s Seasoned Salt, it is all natural and all purpose. It has no fillers, caking agents, sugar or MSG. It is available in Kosher Salt, Sea Salt, Lite (low sodium) Salt and Salt Substitute (no salt). And it tastes great on everything! Here is the website-
