Fifth Third or 5/3 or 1.66 lb. Burger

Spring is in the air. Today was sunny and 72 degrees. That also means that baseball is just around the corner. Spring Training is already underway, and stadiums across the land are preparing for opening day. Here in Nashville, our very own Nashville Sounds' Greer Stadium has been overhauled in the off-season to the tune of $2.5 million. Upgrades include a new paint job, new consession areas, and an actual LED screen. They are even teaming up with local brewery Yazoo to supply the beer for everyone's favorite night, Thirsty Thursday. While the new Greer Stadium is set to open on April 9th, the guy from Man Food is eagerly waiting for opening day at Fifth Third Ballpark. Home of the West Michigan Whitecaps, the 5/3 Ballpark is also the new home of the all new 5/3 or 1.66667 lb. burger that includes salsa, sour cream, and a chili Frito pie served on an eight inch sesame seed bun.
Now in the past, we have seen wild balk park creations and even some BBQ Addicts that explode for bacon, but this creation is equally over the top. Here are the stats:
Fifth Third Burger Nutritional Value |
| DAILY VALUE | ||
| Calorie | 4889 | 244% |
| Total Fat | 299g | 460% |
| Sat. Fat | 199g | 597% |
| Cholesterol | 744mg | 248% |
| Sodium | 10,887mg | 454% |
| Total Carbs | 354g | 118% |
| Protein | 198g | 105% |
It is recommended for 1-4 people, but if an individual finishes it in one sitting he/she wins a nice 5/3 t-shirt. However, you could just skip the burger and sign up for a Fifth Third credit card to get the free shirt. It's really up to you.

Way to go, BACON!
Clearly, the most popular girl in school this year is BACON.
Bacon, bacon, bacon.
From the Thanksgiving TurBACONducken to the recent BBQ Addicts internet phenomenon, everyone is simply mad over bacon.

BBQ Addicts' Bacon Explosion, taking over an internet near you
I like to think that we here at the Ulika Food Blog are the ones who started this whole frenzy. You see, we've been eating bacon for years. It was, after all, BP who introduced the chocolate Bacon bar and placed a few slices of those tasty pork strips on his PB&J MONTHS ago. We told you about the bacon Halloween costume, the bacon briefcase, the gummy bacon strips and the bacon band-aids. And we were the ones who celebrated the victory of BACON over fries.

Bacon Strip Bandages, available from Archie McPhee

Mo's Bacon Bar, by Vosges Haute Chocolates

Uncle Oinker's Strawberry-Flavored (ewww) Gummy Bacon,
also available from Archie McPhee

Congratulations, Bacon
But oh bacon, your reign continues...

the BaconToday folks have spotted a new one - Bacon Lollipops
Then this evening, I came across another new offering in bacon. Why settle for bacon bits in a chocolate bar when you can go ahead and just cover the whole strip of bacon in chocolate:

Chocolate-Covered Bacon, available from Marini's in California
And over on the BBQ Forum, "Mike" has made himself a Bacon beer coozie:

To keep the beer hot? To provide traction?
And now, keeping with those healthy New Year's resolutions, one man has vowed to eat nothing but bacon for the entire month of February.
"...for the entire month of February, 2009, I, Michael J. Nelson will eat nothing but bacon. Nothing, my friends, but bacon. Why? Because bacon is nature’s finest and most nourishing food." - Mike Nelson, Bacon Stupidity

his first batch of bacon - Jimmy Dean's

Nooooooooooooo.
We know it's tasty, but who would have known that the cured belly of a swine carcass could be so trendy too. Stay classy, bacon. We love ya.
Bacon, bacon, bacon.

New BBQ Blog
I have added a new BBQ Blog to my links. Over there --------->>>

BBQ Addicts is a blog that is run by a fellow KCBS team, Burnt Finger BBQ. They just have a few post on the blog, but it is a very entertaining read. I just recently came across this blog when the Nashville Bites posted about their Bacon Explosion. This is something that I plan on cooking very soon. I mean how can you go wrong with sausage wrapped in bacon? I think that I will stuff my sausage with jalapenos instead of bacon, and then do the bacon wrap. However, this really opens the door for so many opportunities in creating your own fattie concoction.

TurBACONducken

Turbaconducken. This would be a duck stuffed inside a chicken stuffed inside a turkey...then wrapped in bacon.
And you can try this at home! There are complete instructions (5 pounds of bacon required for this recipe) with photos available from the fine folks at Bacon Today: Daily Updates on the World of Sweet, Sweet Bacon.
So, what are you making for Thanksgiving?

Bacon vs. Fries Update
We all know what heated race we were really following...

Following up our previous post, we are pleased to announce that BACON was victorious over FRIES.

Decision '08

Are you ready for the election season? It is what the media is tabbing Decision '08. Are you conservative? Are you liberal? Do you vote independent? You may be thinking, "I thought this was a food blog, not a political blog". Well, you are right. That is why we need to cast our votes for either Bacon or Fries.
I have added a poll to the sidebar ------->>>>>>>

Mo's Bacon Bar
I finally gave in. For several months now, I have been hearing about Vosges' outrageous Mo's Bacon Bar - a milk chocolate bar spiked with real applewood smoked bacon. I think everyone's initial reaction is shock, but if you think about it, bacon really is a nice complement to things that are sweet. Lord knows we've been there on this site. I think the only thing that's kept me from trying it is the fact that you can't buy it anywhere around here. But when Jim Ridley referenced the Bacon Bar on Bites last week, that was it. I bit the bullet and ordered a pair.
Do you know how there are some things in life that, when you finally experience them, they just don't live up to how great you thought they'd be? This is not one of those things. Mo's Bacon Bar is everything I dreamed it would be and more. The smooth and rich milk chocolate was prefectly contrasted in both texture and taste by the little chunks of salty bacon goodness. And I was pleasantly surprised to find no shortage of bacon in the bar. For a sweet-and-savory junkie like me, this one really hit the spot.

Today's Topic: Bacon

50 Ways to Use Bacon
Unfortunately, the list excludes a few essential ways to use bacon.
Such as:
1. Bacon wrapped bacon
2. Bacon wrapped sausage
3. Chicken Fried Bacon (see video)

If you ever cut and or burn yourself while cooking bacon, try these bacon bandages. I have never been one for themed band-aids, but I could be down with walking around wearing a bacon bandage.

Can't get enough bacon? Get the sensation of bacon all day long with this gummy bacon.

This is a must have for anyone that wants to smell bacon any time they get in the car.

No office professional is complete without the bacon briefcase. What's in the briefcase you ask? Papers, ya know, just papers. Uh you know, my papers. Business papers. And what do you do, sir? I'm unemployed.

The next best thing to dressing as Jon Burr for Halloween is to come dressed as a piece of bacon.

ANYTHING BUT: PB&J(&B)
"An entire loaf of bread is warmed and then hollowed out. The sandwich is generously spread with peanut butter and an equally thick layer of jelly. Finally, lean bacon has to be cooked, at least a pound fried to crispness, to fill the reamining belly of the loaf."While I wasn't quite feeling up to the challenge of eating the full version, it did pique my curiosity about how our old friend bacon would work on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
I actually wasn't too worried about how bacon and jelly would get along (like my man Joe Baine, I am a longtime proponent of jelly on the sausage biscuit). But how would peanut butter affect the equation?
As it turned out, the peanut butter and the bacon combined to ratchet up the savory factor several intensity notches. I believe the Japanese call this umami. I just call it really freaking delicious. That mighty savory force is nicely tempered by the sweetness the jelly (I went with Tiptree Little Scarlet, but plain 'ol Smuckers ought to work just fine). MmmMmmMmm. Yes, Joe, this truly is where God lives. Here are a few tips for perfecting this delicacy.
1. For best results, lightly toast both pieces of bread, then assmeble the sandwich and fry it in a skillet with some butter until golden brown.
2. You'll want to use bacon that is relatively crispy. Less than crispy bacon will not allow you to take a bite without pulling out a whole piece of bacon.
3. Let the sandwich cool for a few minutes before eating it, so the peanut butter and jelly have a chance to re-solidify somewhat. This way they won't squirt out and burn you.
Note: I'm sorry my picture of the sandwich was so subpar. Natalina, one of these days, I'm going to take you up on the offer for those photography lessons!
